Union Minister J.P. Nadda Ensures Sufficient Urea Supply to Telangana for Kharif Season

On Wednesday, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda met with a delegation led by Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to address fertilizer availability in the state, focusing especially on urea supply during the critical Kharif season.

Chief Minister Reddy emphasized the need for an uninterrupted urea supply in July and August, highlighting the increased demand from farmers during the sowing season. Minister Nadda responded by pledging full support to fulfill the state’s agricultural needs and instructed officials from the Department of Fertilizers to ensure timely delivery based on demand.

However, the Union Minister raised concerns about the excessive use of urea in Telangana. Urea sales during the Rabi 2024–25 season increased by 21% compared to the previous year, and Kharif 2025 has already seen a 12.4% rise in consumption compared to the same period last year. He cautioned that this overuse could harm soil health over time.

Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers, emphasized the PM PRANAM scheme, which rewards states for reducing chemical fertilizer use and encouraging sustainable methods, such as adopting organic and alternative fertilizers. He also called on state officials to enforce strict measures against the diversion of urea for non-agricultural purposes and to ensure fair distribution across all districts.

The meeting included MPs Mallu Ravi and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Telangana’s Special Representative in New Delhi A.P. Jithender Reddy, and senior officials from both the Central and Telangana governments.
