India–Sri Lanka Humanitarian Solidarity Honoured at Maha Bodhi Society Event
In a warm and dignified celebration of humanitarian diplomacy and regional solidarity, the Maha Bodhi Society of India, in collaboration with the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi, hosted a special function in the national capital on Sunday, 8 February 2026, to honour the Government of India for its timely assistance to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
The event acknowledged India’s steadfast support and the critical humanitarian relief extended under “Operation Sagar Bandhu”, which played a vital role in supporting Sri Lanka during the devastating impact of the cyclone.
The occasion was graced by Shri Pabitra Margherita, Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs of India, who attended the function as the Chief Guest, reaffirming India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance, neighbourhood-first diplomacy, and regional cooperation.
Representing Sri Lanka, Her Excellency Ms. Mahishini Colonne, High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to India, was present at the event and expressed deep appreciation for India’s benevolence and swift response during a moment of national crisis. Her presence underscored the enduring friendship and close diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring nations.
Held at the serene premises of the Buddha Vihara, Maha Bodhi Society of India, near Birla Mandir in New Delhi, the ceremony was attended by senior diplomats, members of the Maha Bodhi Society, officials, and representatives of the media.
The event stood as a powerful testament to the shared values of compassion, cooperation, and mutual respect that continue to define India–Sri Lanka relations, highlighting how humanitarian action remains a cornerstone of contemporary diplomacy.
