Ancient Civilizations, Shared Values: India Marks the International Day of Yoga 2026 at the Giza Pyramids

The Embassy of India in Egypt celebrated the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 at the iconic Giza Pyramids, bringing together senior government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, yoga practitioners, media representatives, and friends of India from across Egypt.

Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most enduring symbols of civilization, the event highlighted yoga’s role in promoting physical well-being, mental balance, and harmony with nature. Participants joined a collective yoga session that reflected the spirit of unity, holistic health, and global togetherness that the International Day of Yoga seeks to foster worldwide.

Addressing the gathering, India’s Ambassador to Egypt, Suresh K. Reddy, emphasized that yoga has evolved into a powerful global symbol of public health, inclusivity, and shared human values. He noted that hosting this year’s celebration at the Giza Pyramids represented a meeting of two ancient civilizations whose rich cultural heritage continues to inspire the world.

The event was attended by distinguished guests of honor, including Dr. Ashraf Mohie, Director General of the Giza Pyramids Area and renowned Egyptologist, and acclaimed Egyptian actor Mohamed Khamis. Both speakers praised the strength of India-Egypt relations and their promising future, describing the Giza Pyramids as an ideal venue for celebrating the universal appeal of yoga.

The celebration concluded with expressions of gratitude from Ambassador Reddy and members of the Embassy to all participants, reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening the India-Egypt partnership.

Month-Long Yoga Outreach Across Egypt

In preparation for the main event held on June 21, the Indian Embassy organized a series of yoga workshops and community outreach activities aimed at diverse segments of Egyptian society.

Under this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” a special yoga workshop for senior citizens was conducted in collaboration with a Foundation. The event attracted nearly 500 elderly participants from various professional and social backgrounds. The session underscored yoga’s benefits in enhancing balance, flexibility, and mobility, contributing to healthier and more active ageing.

Among the most notable initiatives was the “Yoga Cartoon Competition,” organized in cooperation with the Fayoum Art Center and the Egyptian Cartoon Society. The competition encouraged participants to explore themes of health and wellness through artistic expression and attracted more than 200 participants from 33 countries. Through humor, creativity, and imagination, artists presented diverse interpretations of yoga, resulting in an impressive collection of cartoon works.

The Embassy also launched a photography competition titled “Your Favorite Yoga Moment,” inviting participants to capture their personal yoga experiences through photography. The initiative received a wide range of submissions featuring yoga enthusiasts practicing in Egypt’s scenic natural and cultural locations, including several iconic sites in Cairo and beyond.

Promoting Yoga Through Culture and Education

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) further contributed to the celebrations through its “Yoga Video Series for International Day of Yoga 2026.” The series featured expert yoga instructors demonstrating a variety of techniques and postures, including Balasana (Child’s Pose), Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes Pose), Dandasana (Staff Pose), and several other classical yoga asanas.

Beyond Cairo, the Embassy of India and MACIC organized yoga workshops and Indian Culture Day events in several Egyptian governorates, including Ismailia and Alexandria. These activities witnessed enthusiastic public participation, reflecting the growing popularity of yoga in Egypt and the strong people-to-people ties that continue to deepen relations between India and Egypt.

As International Day of Yoga 2026 demonstrated, yoga remains not only a practice for personal well-being but also a bridge connecting cultures, fostering mutual understanding, and strengthening the enduring friendship between India and Egypt.
