PM Modi Arrives in Tashkent, India–Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership in Focus
Indian Prime Minister receives warm welcome as Tashkent prepares for high-level bilateral talks
Tashkent, August 29, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tashkent on Saturday for a two-day State Visit to Uzbekistan at the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, beginning the Uzbekistan leg of his four-day visit to Central Asia.
Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by President Mirziyoyev upon his arrival in Tashkent. The visit marks Prime Minister Modi’s fourth visit to Uzbekistan and comes at a time when India and Uzbekistan are looking to further strengthen their Strategic Partnership.
Tashkent has been decorated with Indian flags and hoardings ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, reflecting the importance attached to the occasion. Members of the Indian diaspora in Tashkent also gathered for a special welcome for Prime Minister Modi.
Bilateral Talks on the Road Ahead
Prime Minister Modi and President Mirziyoyev are scheduled to hold discussions on Sunday on the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. The two leaders will review cooperation in trade and investment, defence, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people ties.
The discussions will also cover ways to advance the shared developmental visions of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Uzbekistan-2030, according to the official programme for the visit.
Prime Minister Modi said ahead of the visit that the India–Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership has seen significant advancement in recent years and expressed his intention to further deepen cooperation with President Mirziyoyev in trade and investment, digital connectivity, defence and energy.
Strengthening People-to-People Ties
Alongside the official bilateral programme, the visit also highlights the longstanding cultural and people-to-people connections between India and Uzbekistan.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. These engagements are intended to underline the close cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
The warm welcome from the Indian community and the presence of Indian symbols across Tashkent have added a people-centred dimension to the Prime Minister’s arrival.
Looking Ahead
Prime Minister Modi’s arrival marks the beginning of an important two-day engagement between India and Uzbekistan. The forthcoming talks with President Mirziyoyev will provide an opportunity for both sides to review their Strategic Partnership and establish the agenda for the road ahead.
With trade and investment, defence, digital connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people relations on the bilateral agenda, the discussions are expected to cover a wide range of areas of mutual interest.
For now, Tashkent has welcomed Prime Minister Modi, with the focus turning towards the high-level discussions that will take place on Sunday and the next phase of India–Uzbekistan relations.
