India-Mongolia Defence Ties Strengthen as Nomadic Elephant 2026 Begins in Pithoragarh

Nomadic Elephant 2026 strengthens military interoperability and reinforces the enduring India-Mongolia strategic partnership

The rugged mountains of Pithoragarh have once again become a setting for India’s growing defence engagement with Mongolia, as the 18th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 commenced on September 21 at the Foreign Training Node.

The annual platoon-level exercise, being conducted alternately in India and Mongolia, will continue until October 3. The latest edition brings together personnel from the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces for intensive joint training aimed at strengthening interoperability, operational coordination and mutual understanding.

Nomadic Elephant has emerged as an important pillar of the defence relationship between the two countries. The exercise provides both forces an opportunity to exchange professional experiences, refine tactical procedures and develop greater familiarity with each other’s operational practices.

The 2026 edition focuses particularly on counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate. The demanding geography of Uttarakhand provides a realistic environment for troops to practise operating in challenging conditions while maintaining coordination and operational effectiveness.

The training programme includes a range of contemporary military activities, including cordon-and-search operations, room-intervention drills, special heliborne operations and cyber-security training. The use of drones and counter-drone systems also highlights the changing character of modern warfare and the growing importance of technology in military operations.

Beyond tactical skills, the exercise serves a broader diplomatic purpose. Regular interaction between the two armed forces strengthens professional relationships and reinforces the longstanding friendship between India and Mongolia.

As Indian and Mongolian soldiers train side by side in the Himalayan terrain, Nomadic Elephant 2026 represents more than a military exercise. It reflects the two nations’ commitment to practical defence cooperation, mutual learning and preparedness for evolving security challenges.

The exercise thus adds another meaningful chapter to the enduring India-Mongolia strategic partnership, demonstrating how military-to-military engagement can deepen trust while contributing to broader regional security and cooperation.
