New Judicial and Legal Cooperation Agreement on the Agenda as India and Egypt Hold Talks
Egypt’s Minister of Justice, Counsellor Mahmoud Helmy El Sherif, received Suresh K. Reddy, Ambassador of India to Egypt, for talks aimed at strengthening bilateral judicial cooperation and expanding legal collaboration between the two countries in the areas of technology, capacity building, and cooperation between judicial academies.
The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation across a wide range of legal and judicial fields, including judicial capacity-building, institutional development, and the exchange of legal expertise and best practices. Both sides also reviewed mechanisms to advance the implementation of existing bilateral judicial agreements covering mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, extradition, and the transfer of sentenced persons.
During the discussions, Ambassador Reddy praised Egypt’s ongoing judicial and legislative reforms, highlighting the significant progress made in modernizing the country’s legal system. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening legal cooperation with Egypt and expanding avenues for institutional collaboration.
The two sides also explored the possibility of negotiating a new bilateral agreement on judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters, with the aim of facilitating legal procedures and serving the mutual interests of both nations.
For his part, Minister El Sherif underscored the longstanding friendship between Egypt and India, emphasizing the importance of building upon the strong historical relationship to open new avenues of cooperation in the judicial and legislative sectors.
He reiterated Egypt’s firm commitment to the rule of law and highlighted the comprehensive modernization of the country’s judicial system under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The minister pointed to ongoing efforts to accelerate digital transformation in the justice sector, expand the use of legal technologies, and promote alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to improve access to justice and enhance judicial efficiency.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to maintaining close coordination and updating legislative and institutional frameworks in line with the evolving strategic partnership between Egypt and India.
The discussions reflect the growing momentum in India–Egypt relations, with legal and judicial cooperation emerging as another important pillar of the broader strategic partnership between the two countries.
