External affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar made the announcement after meeting the Sri Lankan President on his first day in office after being sworn in as President of Sri Lanka.

The external affairs minister conveyed PM Modi’s message of a partnership for shared peace, progress, prosperity and security. This will be the maiden overseas visit of Gotabaya after he assumed office.

The visit signifies the importance attached to bilateral relations between the two neighbours. PM Modi was the first foreign leader to telephone Sri Lankan President on Sunday after his victory at the Presidential elections held on Saturday.
