India–Nepal Relations Gain Fresh Momentum as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Visits Kathmandu

India and Nepal have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their longstanding bilateral partnership following the two-day official visit of India’s Foreign Secretary, Shri Vikram Misri, to Nepal on November 4–5, 2026.

At the invitation of Nepal’s Foreign Secretary, Mr. Amrit Bahadur Rai, the visit featured a series of high-level diplomatic engagements aimed at reviewing bilateral cooperation and identifying new opportunities for collaboration.

During the visit, Foreign Secretary Misri called on Nepal’s Prime Minister, Mr. Balendra Shah, and conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Discussions covered the progress of bilateral relations and possible initiatives ahead of the Nepalese Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to India.

Foreign Secretary Misri also met Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha and Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal. Delegation-level discussions between the two Foreign Secretaries reviewed cooperation across various sectors.

Expanding Economic and Development Cooperation

Trade and commerce, hydropower, energy, infrastructure, physical connectivity, border management and development partnership featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides also identified emerging opportunities in digital connectivity, artificial intelligence, start-ups and sports.

An important dimension of the visit was Nepal’s appreciation of India’s swift humanitarian and technical assistance following the Rasuwa–Bhotekoshi floods, reflecting the importance of mutual support during natural disasters.

A Shared Vision for Regional Partnership

Foreign Secretary Misri’s interaction with Nepalese parliamentarians, including members of the Nepal–India Parliamentary Friendship Group, further underlined the importance of parliamentary engagement and people-to-people relations.

The visit reaffirmed the importance of regular high-level exchanges in maintaining the momentum of India–Nepal relations. With cooperation expanding into traditional and emerging sectors, both neighbouring countries have opportunities to translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic, developmental and regional benefits.

The proposed visit of Prime Minister Balendra Shah to India is expected to provide another opportunity to advance this partnership.
