India Shines with Four Medals at 57th International Chemistry Olympiad in Dubai

India delivered an impressive showing at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), held in Dubai, UAE, from July 5 to 14. All four Indian representatives at the prestigious global event earned medals, with two students clinching gold and two securing silver—earning the nation well-deserved international acclaim. Gold medals were awarded to Devesh Pankaj Bhaiya of Jalgaon, Maharashtra, and Sandeep Kuchi from Hyderabad, Telangana. Silver medals went to Debadatta Priyadarshi from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and Ujjwal Kesari from New Delhi.

The 2025 edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad saw 354 students competing from 90 countries, along with five observer nations. India secured the sixth position in the overall medal standings, sharing the spot with Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Israel. This marks India’s 26th appearance at the IChO. Historically, Indian participants have performed remarkably well, earning 30% gold, 53% silver, and 17% bronze medals. Impressively, over the past ten years alone, the share of gold and silver medals has risen to 38% and 58%, highlighting a steady improvement in performance.

The Indian team was guided by a committed group of academic professionals. Prof. Ankush Gupta from the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai, led the delegation as head mentor, while Prof. Seema Gupta from Acharya Narendra Dev College, Delhi, served as mentor. Scientific observers Dr. Neeraja Dashaputre of IISER Pune and Dr. Amrit Mitra from Government General Degree College, Singur, West Bengal, also played key roles. Their collective guidance and support were instrumental in preparing the students for the rigors of this prestigious international competition.

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), a constituent of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), functions as the central hub for training and selecting Indian students for various International Olympiads across disciplines such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, and Astrophysics. The National Olympiad Examinations organized by HBCSE serve as the primary pathway for students aspiring to represent India on these esteemed international platforms.
