Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Arrives in Kathmandu to Strengthen India-Nepal Bilateral Ties
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday for a key official visit aimed at enhancing the multifaceted partnership between India and Nepal. This is Misri’s first visit to Nepal since assuming office as Foreign Secretary, and it comes at a time when both countries are working to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, energy, trade, and people-to-people ties.
During his stay, Foreign Secretary Misri is scheduled to hold discussions with his Nepali counterpart, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and pay courtesy calls on senior Nepali leadership, including Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud.
According to official statements, the visit will focus on reviewing the progress of ongoing bilateral projects, including cross-border railway connectivity, hydropower cooperation, and the implementation of agreements signed during high-level visits in recent years. Misri is also expected to explore new areas of collaboration, particularly in digital connectivity, capacity building, and climate resilience.
Nepal remains a key partner under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, and both sides have expressed a strong desire to maintain regular high-level engagements. The visit underscores India’s continued commitment to supporting Nepal’s development priorities while respecting its sovereignty and sensitivities.
Ahead of his meetings, Misri expressed optimism about furthering the long-standing and friendly ties between the two countries. “India and Nepal share deep historical, cultural, and economic bonds. I look forward to constructive discussions to take our partnership to greater heights,” he said.
The visit is expected to lay the groundwork for upcoming bilateral exchanges and set the tone for stronger regional cooperation in South Asia.
