India and Austria Explore New Avenues to Strengthen Bilateral Partnership
Jaishankar and Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger review bilateral relations, with focus on trade, technology, education and international cooperation
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger in New Delhi on October 28 to review the India-Austria bilateral relationship and discuss opportunities for expanding cooperation across key sectors.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both ministers to take stock of the existing partnership and exchange views on its future direction. Discussions covered a wide range of areas, including trade and investment, infrastructure, technology, innovation, education, culture, mobility, defence and security.
Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Austria’s expertise in advanced manufacturing, industrial technology, railway infrastructure and hydropower offers opportunities for collaboration with India’s growing economy. Both countries can benefit from greater engagement between businesses, investors and institutions, particularly in areas involving technology and sustainable development.
The ministers also discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in startups, space, skill development and mobility. Education, vocational training and people-to-people exchanges remain important components of the bilateral relationship, offering scope for closer institutional and professional connections.
Regional and international developments were also part of the discussions. Both sides exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and emphasised the importance of multilateral cooperation. Dr. Jaishankar congratulated Austria on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–28 term. The discussion also highlighted the importance of cooperation within the United Nations framework on matters relating to international peace and security.
The broader India-European Union relationship provided another important context for the engagement. Closer economic and diplomatic ties between India and European countries, including Austria, offer opportunities to expand trade, investment and technological partnerships.
The October 28 meeting reaffirmed the importance both countries attach to their bilateral relationship. By maintaining regular diplomatic engagement and exploring cooperation in emerging and traditional sectors, India and Austria are seeking to build a broader and more dynamic partnership.
The discussions in New Delhi reflect their shared interest in strengthening economic relations, promoting technological exchange and maintaining constructive engagement on regional and global issues.
