India and Japan Deepen Strategic Engagement Through Parliamentary Dialogue
LDP delegation’s meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlights cooperation in economic security, technology and resilient supply chains
India and Japan continued their high-level engagement with a meeting between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and a delegation of Japanese parliamentarians from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in New Delhi. The meeting focused on sustaining the positive momentum in bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across strategic and economic areas.
The Japanese delegation was led by Taro Kono, Director General of the LDP’s International Bureau and a former Japanese Foreign, Defence and Digital Minister. Other members included Kenji Nakanishi, Karen Makishima and Sakon Yamamoto. The delegation visited India under the India–Japan Distinguished Visitors Programme from September 18–22, 2026.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, discussions covered defence, economic security, supply-chain resilience, trade and investment, technology, innovation and people-to-people linkages. The Japanese parliamentarians also noted India’s progress in deep-tech entrepreneurship, research and innovation, as well as its expanding manufacturing capabilities.
Economic security and resilient supply chains were important areas of discussion. Both countries are seeking greater cooperation as global economic and geopolitical conditions continue to evolve. Strengthening reliable supply chains and expanding economic partnerships have become increasingly significant components of India–Japan relations.
The Japanese delegation also visited key Indian institutions in Bengaluru, including the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The visits provided an opportunity to gain insights into India’s capabilities in research, space, technology and defence.
The engagement forms part of the broader India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which encompasses cooperation in defence, technology, investment, infrastructure and the Indo-Pacific.
The latest parliamentary exchange highlights the importance of sustained political dialogue between the two countries and provides further opportunities to strengthen cooperation in technology, economic security, trade, investment and resilient supply chains.
