Nations Unite: India and Kenya Honour World War I Soldiers with India-Africa commemorative Memorial Pillar
In a significant act of remembrance and cooperation, India’s Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Roselinda Soipan Tuya, jointly unveiled the India-Africa Commemorative Pillar on Monday at Mile 27 in Taita Taveta County, Kenya. The ceremony paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the unknown Indian and African soldiers who lost their lives during World War I in the East African campaign.
The commemorative initiative was conceived by the High Commission of India in Kenya and brought to fruition with financial support from the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The project was executed in close collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces and officials from Taita Taveta County.
The pillar stands as a powerful symbol of the shared military heritage and enduring solidarity between India and Kenya. Beyond honouring the fallen soldiers, it underscores the deepening defence partnership between the two nations—founded on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a common commitment to peace and global security.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Kenya Defence Forces, representatives of Taita Taveta County, delegates from India’s Ministry of Defence, and other dignitaries from the diplomatic and military communities.
