G7 Demands Restart of Iran Nuclear Deal Negotiations
On Monday, foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) expressed their support for the ceasefire between Israel and Iran and called for the resumption of negotiations to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, according to a joint statement.
Since April, Iran and the United States have engaged in discussions seeking a new diplomatic resolution concerning Iran’s nuclear program. While Tehran maintains that its program is for peaceful purposes, Israel and its allies express concerns and aim to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
“We urge the restart of negotiations to achieve a comprehensive, verifiable, and lasting agreement that effectively addresses Iran’s nuclear program,” stated the G7 foreign ministers.
Last week, Trump declared a ceasefire between Israel, a U.S. ally, and its regional adversary Iran, aiming to stop the conflict that began on June 13 when Israel launched an attack on Iran. The Israel-Iran confrontation had heightened tensions in a region already unsettled by Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza since October 2023.
Prior to the ceasefire announcement, Washington carried out strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, prompting Iran to retaliate by targeting a U.S. base in Qatar.
The G7 foreign ministers called on “all parties to refrain from actions that might further destabilize the region.”
U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff described the discussions between Washington and Tehran as “promising” and expressed hope for achieving a long-term peace agreement.
