India Honours Korean War Legacy in Seoul: Rajnath Singh Inaugurates Indian War Memorial at Imjingak Park
A Historic Moment of Remembrance in South Korea
In a significant gesture of shared history and enduring friendship, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh jointly inaugurated the Indian War Memorial at Imjingak Park in Seoul alongside South Korea’s Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-eul.
The ceremony formed part of commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of the Korean War, reflecting the growing depth of India–South Korea relations and their commitment to honouring historical bonds forged during a time of conflict and humanitarian crisis.
Tribute to India’s Humanitarian Role in the Korean War
The memorial is dedicated to India’s humanitarian and peacekeeping contributions during and after the Korean War (1950–1953). It specifically honours the service of the 60 Para Field Ambulance and the Custodian Force of India (CFI).
These Indian units played a crucial role under the United Nations framework, providing medical support to wounded soldiers, assisting civilians affected by the war, and contributing to post-conflict stabilization efforts. Their service became a symbol of compassion and neutrality in one of the most challenging conflict zones of the era.
Imjingak Park: A Symbolic Site of Peace and Memory
Located at Imjingak Park, the memorial stands in a place already associated with reflection, reconciliation, and remembrance on the Korean Peninsula. Its inauguration adds a new dimension to the site, recognizing India’s contributions to humanitarian relief and peacekeeping during the Korean War.
The structure serves as a lasting reminder of shared sacrifices and the international efforts that helped alleviate human suffering during the conflict.
Strengthening India–South Korea Historical and Strategic Ties
The joint inauguration underscores the evolving partnership between India and South Korea, which continues to expand beyond economic and strategic cooperation into cultural and historical engagement.
Both sides highlighted the importance of preserving historical memory while strengthening present-day collaboration under their growing Special Strategic Partnership.
A Legacy of Service, A Message of Peace
The Indian War Memorial stands not only as a tribute to the courage and compassion of Indian personnel but also as a symbol of global solidarity during times of conflict.
The event reflects a shared commitment by India and South Korea to peace, remembrance, and deeper cooperation—linking history with a forward-looking vision for stronger bilateral relations.
