Mithila Makhana Goes Global: Bihar’s Superfood Finds a New Market in Australia

Bihar’s iconic Mithila Makhana is taking a significant step towards becoming a globally recognised Indian food product, with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitating the first commercial sea shipment of 18 metric tonnes to Australia.

From Bihar’s Farms to Global Markets

The consignment was sourced from Makhana growers in Darbhanga district and dispatched from the BIADA Industrial Area in Bihta. Bihar Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha flagged off the shipment in the presence of horticulture officials, APEDA representatives, exporters, logistics partners and Makhana growers.

The shipment represents more than a new export destination. It demonstrates how connecting farmers directly with international supply chains can create better commercial opportunities for agricultural producers.

Better Returns for Farmers

According to APEDA, the export-oriented supply chain helped participating farmers achieve nearly 18 per cent higher returns than prevailing market rates. This highlights the potential of international market access to improve farm incomes when producers are connected with organised export channels.

Mithila Makhana received its GI registration in 2022, giving the product a distinctive geographical identity and strengthening its potential for premium positioning in domestic and overseas markets.

Why Makhana Is Gaining Global Attention

Makhana, also known as Fox Nuts, is increasingly viewed as a nutritious snack. APEDA’s nutritional analysis shows that popped Makhana contains protein and dietary fibre while being naturally low in fat. It also provides minerals including calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc.

These characteristics make Makhana attractive to consumers seeking plant-based, light and convenient snack options. It can be consumed roasted or incorporated into a variety of traditional and modern food products.

Scope for a Bigger Export Business

The Australia shipment could encourage further investment in processing, grading, packaging, branding, quality control and export logistics. APEDA’s recent study on boosting Makhana exports identifies significant scope to strengthen India’s position in the international market.

For Bihar, the growing overseas demand presents an opportunity to build a stronger agricultural export ecosystem while creating additional value for farmers and businesses.
