India Puts Global South at Heart of BRICS 2026 Agenda in Cairo

India has placed a stronger voice for the Global South at the centre of its BRICS 2026 chairship, with New Delhi highlighting closer cooperation with Egypt as a key avenue for advancing shared priorities within the grouping.

Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (Consular, Passport and Visa and Overseas Indian Affairs) Sripriya Ranganathan highlighted India’s priorities for its BRICS 2026 Chairship while addressing the inaugural session of the India-Egypt BRICS Partnership Conference in Cairo, the Indian Embassy in Egypt said.

The conference was organised by the Indian Embassy in collaboration with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) at the Diplomatic Club in Cairo. The discussions focused on strengthening the India-Egypt partnership through the BRICS platform, under the theme of giving the Global South a stronger voice.

Ranganathan underscored that the India-Egypt Strategic Partnership provides a strong foundation for closer cooperation within BRICS and for advancing the priorities of the Global South, according to the embassy.

The Cairo engagement carries added significance as Egypt is a BRICS member and an important partner for India in Africa and the wider Global South. For New Delhi, closer coordination with Cairo offers an opportunity to translate its BRICS chairship priorities into greater cooperation among developing economies.

The conference also comes during Ranganathan’s official visit to Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon from August 16-21, aimed at strengthening India’s friendly relations with the three countries and discussing regional and international developments.

The meeting signals India’s effort to use its BRICS chairship not only to deepen cooperation among member states but also to promote a more inclusive, representative and equitable international order, with the concerns and aspirations of the Global South receiving greater international attention.
