India–Mauritius Maritime Partnership Enters a New Phase as Indian Ocean Security Takes Centre Stage
Admiral Krishna Swaminathan’s Mauritius visit underscores India’s growing maritime engagement with a key Indian Ocean partner
India and Mauritius are moving to deepen their maritime security partnership, with the Indian Ocean emerging as an increasingly important area of strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan called on Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Wednesday during his four-day visit to Mauritius, which began on August 10. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral maritime engagement and enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
Maritime Security at the Heart of the Partnership
The talks underline the importance India and Mauritius attach to maintaining a secure, stable and rules-based maritime environment in the Indian Ocean. Cooperation between the two countries extends across maritime surveillance, training, capacity building and operational coordination.
For Mauritius, which occupies a strategically significant position in the Indian Ocean, stronger maritime capabilities are crucial to protecting its extensive maritime interests and Exclusive Economic Zone.
Building Capabilities Through Partnership
India has emerged as an important partner in helping Mauritius strengthen its maritime capabilities. Training, professional exchanges, technical assistance and operational cooperation have become important components of the bilateral relationship.
The Indian Navy and Mauritius National Coast Guard have developed close working ties, creating opportunities for greater coordination in areas such as maritime domain awareness, surveillance and responses to emerging maritime challenges.
A Shared Vision for the Indian Ocean
The engagement also reflects India’s broader approach towards the Indian Ocean, where partnerships with island nations form an important part of its regional strategy.
Through its MAHASAGAR vision—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions—India has emphasised collaborative approaches to maritime security, economic development and capacity building with countries across the region.
Beyond Security: A Strategic Partnership
The growing maritime relationship is part of a much wider India-Mauritius partnership encompassing development cooperation, infrastructure, trade, education, technology and people-to-people ties.
Admiral Swaminathan’s visit provides another opportunity to translate this longstanding relationship into deeper practical cooperation at sea. With maritime security becoming increasingly central to the stability and prosperity of the Indian Ocean, India and Mauritius are well positioned to strengthen their role as partners in building a safer and more resilient regional maritime environment.
